U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born the son of Congressman of Joseph Davis Brodhead, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced to practice law in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1837-39) and appointed treasurer of Northampton County, in 1841. In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1851-57).
