Tobacco Magnate's Heir. He was born to tobacco magnate Richard Joshua Reynolds and his wife, Katherine Smith Reynolds. He attended the Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia. He was an aviation enthusiast, who undoubtedly would have made a name for himself in that field if he had lived longer. Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem, North Carolina was named in his honor. While at his family's estate, the "Reynolda", Smith died under mysterious circumstances with a gunshot wound to the head. His wife, Libby Holman, was an actress and singer; she was indicted for his murder. Later, the charges were dismissed by the Reynolds family. A great portion of Smith's Estate was used as the "core" for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, which has contributed many millions of dollars to worthy causes in North Carolina.
