"...NOBLY DEFENDING THE CAUSE OF HIS COUNTRY, HE FELL ... AS ONLY THE BRAVE FALL!" (see his Captain's letter at left)

Oliver enlisted in Company E, PA 107th Infantry Regiment on Feb. 28, 1862. He was mortally wounded in Battle of Antietam on Sep. 17, dying 7 days later in an Army field hospital near Keedysville, Washington Co, MD.

Oliver married Hester "Hetty" Hipple on Jan. 16, 1835 in Lancaster Co, PA. This union produced 10 children, seven surviving when Oliver enlisted in the Army.

The Cochrans' oldest son Martin also served in same unit as his father. Martin died of battle wounds in the last days of the Civil War.

Hetty, left with 3 minor children at time of Oliver's death, was awarded a military widow's pension in Apr 1863 and collected it until her death.

Although unverified, Oliver's remains are believed to be interred among the Unknowns at Antietam National Cemetery. In 1879, the US Army delivered a Civil War memorial grave marker for "Oliver Cochran Sr" to the Marietta Cemetery.
