James' parents Captain James Parker and Mary Parker were killed by Indians in the Groton Massacre of July 27, 1694 that occurred in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Phinehas, James' brother, was taken captive by the Indians during the attack and was a prisoner for four years until ransomed. James and his other siblings hid out during the massacre, but were left orphans.

James moved from Lynn, Massachusetts to North Yarmouth, Maine in 1719. He was a captain, inn-holder and a selectman. His brother Phinehas Parker is buried in the Old Burying Ground, Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

Note: "Parker in America 1630-1910," edited by Augustus G. Parker, published in 1911 by Niagara Frontier in Buffalo, New York, page 539 believes the birth year is different saying, "This does not agree with his actual a(ge), but the evidence is too strong to be over thrown by a clerk's or stone-cutter's error." There are multiple references to James on pages 536 - 539 with a listing of his eight children: Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ruth, James, Benjamin, Esther and Rebecca on page 539.
