The Topeka Daily Capital, 30 May 1896, Saturday
Uncle Ben Payne, who died Thursday, was the great-grandson of Wm. Payne, Jr., who held a commission under General Washington during the Revolutionary war and in a personal difficulty with Washington, in the court house yard at Alexandria, Va., knocked Washington down. After a night's reflection Washington sought an interview with Colonel Payne and apologized to him saying, "Colonel, you were right and I was in the wrong." From that time George Washington and Colonel Wm. Payne were friends. Colonel Payne was one of the pallbearers at Washington's funeral.
