Alexander was born in the Province of Quebec to John And Mary Ann Laing. The family moved to Essex County when Alex was a boy, and lived in Colchester Township. He married Margaret Catharine Jeffery in 1873, and they raised 7 children. He was the inventor of the Laing Planetarium, which is a tellurium; a moving model which depicts the orbits of the planets. It was patented in Canada in 1896 and in Detroit in 1897.
