Jean Ardys Pierce, 92, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2011 at L. J. Flower House in Nashville.

She was born April 19, 1919 to Wayne S. and Helen N. (Puffer) Packer in Pennfield Township. She attended school in Pennfield and Athens but finished her education later in life at Lakeview High School, graduating in 1973.

On September 2, 1934 she married M. Arnold Pierce. After living at several locations in Battle Creek and Marshall they settled on a small farm north of Bedford. She continued to live there until 2000 when she moved to Battle Creek.

Jean worked as a secretary at the Battle Creek V. A. until she retired in 1987. She loved to bird watch and back packing. Isle Royal, Drummond Island and locations in northern Michigan were a few of the places she would back pack with her long-time friend, Evelyn Hinson and grandson, Erik VanHorn. Other interests included gardening, reading and music.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, M. Arnold Pierce in 1972; an infant son, Richard Lee Pierce in 1937, son, M. Arnold Pierce, Jr. in 2001, granddaughter, Kathryn Brauer in 1995, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Jean is survived by her son, Merritt (Ronniemay) Pierce of Battle Creek, daughter, Susan Van Horn of Greensboro, North Carolina, son, Roger (Jane) Pierce of Vermontville, daughter-in-law, Charlotte Pierce of Battle Creek and sister, Maxine Skidmore of Vicksburg; 12 grandchildren , 23 great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at Shaw Funeral Home, 2838 Capital Ave. SW, Battle Creek.

Memorial donations may go to L.J. Flower House (9950 S. Clark Road, Nashville, MI 49073) or Pennock Hospice (Checks payable to Pennock Foundation, 1230 W. State St., Hastings, MI 49058).

The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home.
