Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company C, 29th Massachusetts Infantry. He was a prisoner of war. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, Virginia. His citation reads "Although wounded and carried to the rear, he secured a rifle and voluntarily returned to the front, where, failing to find his own regiment, he joined another and fought with it until again severely wounded and taken prisoner."
