But when Rolf produced mere grand entertainment, Karl Gerhard gave his productions a clearly political stand, filled with satire and subtle humour. During World War II he defied the Nazis, and his revue piece ”Den ökända hästen från Troja” (The notorious horse of Troy) annoyed the German regime. At this time the pressure on the Swedish government was great, and he became cencored during the war. His lyrics was designated by ingenious formulations and contemporary comments of precision.He was one of few who dared to critizise Hitler and the nazis in public. He made 100 revues, wrote 4.000 songs and made 240 recordings, among them”Jazzgossen” , one his most popular songs. Actress/singer Zarah Leander commenced her career in his productions.
