ORLEANS - Harold was a loving and devoted husband to Ella (nee Plavin); father to sons Stan, Henry, Bob, Eric, and Bill; father-in-law to Candy, Debbie, Judy, Kathleen, and Rosemary; and grandfather to twelve. He was born February 12, 1922 in Brooklyn NY to Samuel and Yetta. Harold joined older sister Blanche and is survived by younger brother Alvin. Samuel Brehm was a tailor and furrier, operating a small store in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Blanche was an accomplished pianist and opera singer, and Alvin has had a long career as a renowned musician and scholar. After battling a number of medical challenges during his boyhood, Harold attended City College of New York. He then enlisted in the Army during the Second World War and was sent to Baylor University to continue his education in Dentistry. After graduating from Baylor, he began practicing as a dentist in northern New Jersey, where he met Ella, and they were wed on July 1, 1950. Eldest son Stan was born the following year. In 1952 during the Korean War the Army deployed Harold to serve as a dentist for servicemen and their families at a base in Tachikowa Japan, where son Henry was born in 1953. After the war the family lived in Boston while Harold pursued a graduate degree in Orthodontics from Tufts University.
Sons Bob, Eric and Bill were born in Boston, and the family settled in Lexington where all the children graduated from high school. Harold was an orthodontist in Lexington, practicing until his retirement in 1985 when he and Ella moved full time to Orleans, MA on Cape Cod. Throughout his years in Lexington Harold was a respected local professional, receiving the highest recognition of his peers when he attained national Board Certification in Orthodontics in 1970. Harold was a volunteer adjunct faculty at the Tufts Graduate School of Orthodontics for over 20 years, guiding students in their clinical work.
He was active in building the Jewish community that was to become the congregation of Temple Isaiah, where all five sons attained their Bar Mitzvah.
On Cape Cod Harold pursued his love of the outdoors, and in particular sailing, and encouraged his entire family to enjoy them too. Progressing from the crudest of sailboards to sloops capable of overnight excursions, Harold sailed for many years in Nantucket Sound, and loved every minute of it. His volunteer work with the National Seashore kept him active in the community, and over the years he and Ella contributed to many charities and set up college scholarship funds to enable students from impoverished backgrounds to attend Tufts and the University of Massachusetts. Harold was a true believer in social and environmental justice, and he followed those principles in his personal life and in his charitable giving. Services were held at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln Street, Lexington MA on Friday July 22. Burial was in Westview Cemetery, 520 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Memory of Harold Brehm to one of these organizations: The Lighthouse Hospice Foundation c/o Beacon Hospice, 529 Main Street, Suite 101, Boston MA 02129 http://tlhospicefoundation.org; or the Community Development Partnership of Cape Cod at www.capecdp.org/content/about—us/
