Mr. Alfred Waters Spates, 87, of Poolesville, died Saturday, Sept. 12, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville.

He was the husband of Marie-Renee Spates.

Born Sept. 6, 1911, in Washington, he was the son of the late William O. and Ethel Waters Spates.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Beatrice de Lannoy of Belgium, Eric C. Spates of Poolesville, Jane Sieke of Florida, and Robert Spates of Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren, Mike and Bobby Sieke, Judy Martin, Barbara Ahalt, Richard, William, Robert Jr., David and Clarence Spates, Patricia Christianson, and Carol Kaffman; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mr. Spates had been a longtime member of the Maryland Bar Association, and practiced law in Rockville until the early 1980s when he moved his practice briefly to Poolesville.

He was an active member of Suburban Trust Bank in Germantown as well as the Steuben Society.

He also served many years on the Draft Board, and was a longtime member of Poolesville Baptist Church.

Mr. Spates was a lifelong farmer with a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and planting trees. He was a member of the Maryland Fur Trappers Association.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Md. 109), Barnesville.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Poolesville Baptist Church, 17550 Willard Road, Poolesville, Md. 20837.

Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Poolesville Baptist Church.

NOTE: Marie was the daughter of Madeleine Kneppelhout van Sterkenburg, Countess de Chastel of Belgium. She purchased Stoney Castle on Westerly Road, Poolesville in 1949 and bequeathed it to her daughter, Marie, and her husband, Alfred, who inherited it.
