Springfield, O. News-Sun, Sunday, June 21, 1964: Lt. Wayne A. Becker, 52, an aeronautical engineer with the Royal Air Force of England & formerly of Springfield, died last Sunday at 9:25 p.m. in the Veterans Administration Hospital at Roanoke, Va. While suffering from leukemia, death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Becker, the son of Aloes S. & Etta Rutan Becker, was born November 15, 1911, in Springfield & graduated from Springfield Senior H. S. in January ,1929. After serving in the U.S. Navy from September, 1929 to November,1934, he joined Transcontinental Western Airways in Kansas City, Ks. in 1934. From July, 1935 until November 1939 he became an engineer with Pan American Airways & stationed in Trinidad, British West Indies. When WWII broke out in 1939, Mr. Becker paid his own passage from Trinidad to England & on Feb. 22, 1940, entered at Little Risington, Glourcestershire, England, in the Royal Air Force. He was commissioned a pilot officer in the RAF by King George VI March 4, 1940. From May to September, 1940, he attended Officers School of Aeronautical Engineers at Henlow and became a flight Lieutenant. He also served in the Eagle Squadron, a unit composed of Americans formed prior to the U. S. entry into the war. Later he served with the British Commandos in Africa. On Sept.16, 1942, he married the former Doris Greener in St. Marleybone District, London, England. Besides his widow, he leaves 2 sons, Timothy & Robin of London, England, a sister Mrs. C. Harold Warfel of Springfield, brother, Eldon F. on Toledo, Oh., a niece of Springfield & several Aunts & Cousins. Graveside services were held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Trinity Cemetery, Botetourt County, Virginia, with the Rev. Wm K. Bean, Chaplain of the Veterans Hospital of Roanoke officiating.
