Fred Ernest Blankenship, 79, of 420 Walker St., a pioneer resident of the Wenatchee Valley, died in a local hospital Wednesday following a short illness.

He was born July 9, 1880, Mt. Vernon, Ill. In 1890 he came to Lake Wenatchee with his parents, the first group of people to arrive there. On Sept. 21, 1904, he married Bertha Mae Vest at Wenatchee. They lived in Leavenworth unitl 1911 when they moved to Winton. In 1917, Mr. Blankenship went to work for the Great Northern Railway in Leavenworth and when the Round House was moved five years later, he came to Wenatchee. He was employed as a carman until his retirement in 1949.

He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 204 and the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America Local 296.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Willis Blankenship, Wenatchee; three daughters, Mrs. Warren Harper, Mrs. Edward Francis, and Mrs. W. R. DeGrasse, all of Wenatchee; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Estella Reardon of Seattle, and Mrs. Mae Herscher, Long Beach, Calif.; and one brother, Harry Blankenship, Quincy.
