A Former Port Angeles business owner and tourism promoter, Lawrence "Larry" Winters, died Wednesday, April 27, 1988, at his home in Hemet, California. Winters, 77, along with his brother Tom, started the ski tows at the Deer Park Ski area in 1946 and later at Hurricane Ridge, which he operated for many years.
He owned and operated Gray Line sightseeing, as well as olympic Travel Bureau, which is now managed by his daughter and son-in-law, Riena and Bill Gilbertson.
For many years he owned and operated Standard stations in Port Angeles and for five years a grocery and gas station at First and Chambers streets. He worked in the service station business for 40 years, eventually owning Larry Winter;s Garage on Front Street, which he later sold.
Winters was born July 13, 1911, in Fairview (Port Angeles) to Oscar H and Fannie E. Bradshaw Winters. He attended schools in Fairview, Ramapo, (Eaden Valley), Leland, Joyce, and Quilcene, graduating from Quilicene in 1929. His grandfather, Geroge Winters, homesteaded the first farm on the Deer Park road in 1884.
He married Dorace A. Clark March 22, 1936, in Tacoma. He retired to California 12 years ago.
