A graveside service for Melba Brooks Kerr, 96, lifelong resident of Tyler, Texas, will be held on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler with Rev. B.C. McCoy officiating.

Mrs. Kerr passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, 2011, under the care of Hospice of East Texas.

Melba was born May 28, 1915 to Judge Nat W. and Lena Arnold Brooks.

She grew up in Tyler graduating from Tyler High School and Tyler Junior College. In 1937 she graduated from Baylor University with a major in History. To keep from spending anymore of her father's money by going to law school at Baylor, she returned to Tyler to attend Tyler Commercial College where she graduated and began employment as a legal secretary in Tyler. She met Donnell F. Kerr in high school and they were married May 25, 1941.

Melba was a devoted, thoughtful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who put her family, friends and Lord above herself. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Tyler where she was active as secretary-treasurer of the Nena Davis Sunday School Class, before health issues kept her away. She was a longtime member of the Tyler Woman's Forum and the City Park Garden Club and a devoted supporter of the Tyler Community Concert Association.

Melba was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Donnell, her parents Nat and Lena Brooks and her sister, Myra Potter.

She is survived by her loving family including son Brooks Kerr and wife Karen, daughter Donna Kerr Barron all of Tyler; 3 grandchildren, Kristi Peer and husband Matthew of Bullard, Marcus Kerr and wife Misty of Flint, and Andrew Kerr and wife Emilie of Tyler; 7 great-grandchildren, Jackson and Crosby Peer, Brooklyn Kerr, Mallory and Colton Hatcher, Brooks Asa and Scarlett Kerr; niece, Eleanor Potter Morris and husband Gerald; a great niece and three great nephews.
