Edward Beecher Nims was born April 20, 1838 at Sullivan, Cheshire County, NH and died May 24, 1936 at Northampton, Hampshire, MA. He was the son of Seth Nims and Maria Frost. He was married first on September 5, 1867 at Ticonderoga, Essex County, NY by Rev. Mr. Allen to Elizabeth Delano. Elizabeth Electa Delano was born December 24, 1836 at Ticonderoga, Essex, NY and died May 15, 1895 at Northampton, MA. She was the daughter of Asa P. Delano and Pamelia Rogers. He was married second to Inez Field on June 23, 1897. Inez Mahala Field was born February 5, 1861 at Hawley, MA, the daughter of Elijah Field and Martha Williams.

Dr. Edward B. Nims was a student at Kimball Union Academy from 1855 to 1858. He presented "Political Revolutions a Harbinger of Success to the Church" at the commencement exercises in 1858. Nims entered Williams College in 1858 and graduated in 1862. He then entered the University of Vermont at Burlington to obtain his medical training.

Dr Nims was mustered in, in the field, May 8, 1864 as Asst. Surgeon for the First Vermont Cavalry, for three years. He served from May 1864 to June 1865 when he was given a leave of absence for typhoid fever. His service included 30 battles under Sheridan's command including Wilderness and the Fall of Richmond.

After the war, he continued his medical education at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and received his medical degree from the Vermont University. Dr. Nims was appointed Asst. Physician at Vermont State Asylum at Brattleboro from February 1866 to December 1868. He then became the Asst. Physician under Dr. Pliny Earl at Northampton Asylum. He was elevated to Head Physician on October 21, 1885 and remained responsible for up to 600 patients until his retirement in April 1897.

After his retirement he continued to consult with other physicians and was considered a specialist in brain diseases. He lived 94 years and his longevity was attributed [in his diary] to an "unfailing interest in the affairs of the world, to the good care he took of himself, plenty of exercise by walking, and a calm, philosophic view of life." See Gay's Gazetteer of Hampshire County, Massachusetts, 1654-1887 for a photograph [SIC biography] of Dr. Nims.
