Inventor. A native of Alsace, Joseph Spiess was considered to be the first to have the idea of a rigid airship or dirigible. His design relied on hollow wooden beams for the structure, whereas later, Zeppelins were made with aluminum beams. A Bas' Relief of his dirigible adorns his grave.
