Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A salesman and bookkeeper in Brooklyn, New York City, New York before the war, he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 139th New York Volunteer Infantry on September 10, 1862, serving under Colonel Anthony Conk as second-in-command of the regiment until July 29, 1863, when Colonel Conk resigned. Promoted to Colonel and commander of the regiment on August 25, 1863, he led the unit through the end of the war. At the September 29, 1864 Battle of Chapin’s Farm during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia, he commanded the Third Brigade of the First Division of the XVIII Army Corps, and led his men as they stormed the ramparts of Confederate held Fort Harrison, despite being nearly prostrated by illness. His bravery that day saw him brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 28, 1864, with his citation reading "for gallant and meritorious services in the attack upon the enemy's works at Fort Harrison, Virginia.” He was honorably mustered out with his regiment on June 29, 1865 at Richmond, Virginia. After the war he served a year as Postmaster General for Brooklyn, and then as a clerk in a customs house.
