NEWTON CHAPIN PASSED AWAY
Born in Henderson County Almost Sixty Years Ago He Came to Maple City When a Young Man — Was in the Grocery Busniss.
. Newton Chapin died at his home, 803 South Eighth street, this city, at 8 p.m. Thursday. He was confined to the house for less than a week, yet it was felt that it was his last illness as he had been a sufferer with consumption for a number of years.
. Mr. Chapin was well known in this city and in Henderson county where he had spent his lifetime, excepting a short residence in Colorado. Newton Chapin was born in Henderson county on Aug. 31, 1848, and spent his early boyhood in that county. When twenty-one years of age he was a resident of Monmouth and here, in 1869, married Miss Ella Claycomb. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. F. M. Bruner, at that time pastor of the Christian church, and a cousin of the bride.
. Of this union there survives, besides the widow, five children, all of whom are residents of Monmouth; Grace, Guy, Benjamin, George and Fern Chapin. Besides the immediate family there is one brother, Cyrus Chapin, living in Denver, Colo., and three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Holmes* of Biggsville, Mrs. T. T. Perry of Girard, Kan., and Mrs. John S. Firoved of Denver, Colo.
. Mr. Chapin had been conducting a grocery at 514 South Third street for a number of years, and had built up a nice business by his courteous attention to his customers, and was a man who had many friends who will sympathize with the family in their bereavement.
