Per his headstone: he was a son of Rufus Clarke Shepard and Mary Anne Shepard. According to US Census records for Old Saybrook, Middlesex, CT: he lived with his parents then with his sister (along with other sister Frances C) Mary Granniss and her family. No occupation is listed on any census suggesting that he may have been handicapped in some way...just a theory.
