Erna Grace Matthews,19, and her sister, Irma Lydia Matthews, 17, were tragically killed in an automobile accident on Saturday, December 15, 1956. They were the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Matthews.

Erna was a 1955 graduate of Johnsonville High School where she was a member of the Beta Club. She was a member of the Prospect Southern Methodist Church, the Sally Eaddy Missionary Society and the Bishop Humphries Sunday School Class. She was a 4-H member of the JHA.

Erna and Irma sang at various meetings and church affairs in the Hemingway and Johnsonville area.

Double funeral services were held at the Prospect Southern Methodist Church on Monday, December 17, 1956 at 11 a.m. The Rev Paul K. Holland, pastor and the Rev. J. M. Dowling, a former pastor, conducted the service. Burial followed in Powell Cemetery at Prospect.
