Lewis Augustus Spaugh (born Spach, later changed to Spaugh) was the yongest of three known children of Samuel Spaugh (1797-1858) and Catherina Greter (became Crater) Spaugh (1796-1875), who married 19 Nov 1818 at Friedberg, Stokes (became Forsyth) County, North Carolina. The familiy moved to the vicinity of the Moravian Community of Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana sometime before 1841.
Lewis married Martha Louisa Clauder (1837-1912) on 20 Nov 1853 at Bartholomew County, Indiana. Lewis and Martha were the parents of three known children, two girls and one boy:
1. Charles Henry Spaugh (1857-1859)
2. Ella E. Spaugh Gay (1860-???)
3. Lela M. Spaugh Neligh (1868-1961)
