Mary Elizabeth Frerichs had five children, three of which were alive in 1900. Nancy Jane Reed was the eldest, John William Fowler was the next, followed by Sarah Josephine. Marion Sneed had died just a few years previously. The fifth child is unknown and probably very shortlived. The only two marriages that have been found was the one to Arch Sneed after the youngest child had been born and her last to Elijah Smith with whom she spent her last years and had no children. She was a midwife as was her daughter Sarah Josephine. The first two children were apparently recognized by their fathers and carried their surnames though their parents were unmarried. Sarah Josephine was known by Frerichs or sometimes Sneed before her marriage.
