During the Civil War he served in the Union Army as a Private in Company D of the 33rd Regiment of the Missouri Infantry Volunteers.
Private McGinnis died of consumption on January 29, 1863 at the Convalescent Hospital at the Benton Barracks (also known as Camp Benton) in north St. Louis County, 4-5 miles from the City of St. Louis, Missouri.
