Publisher and Athlete. He was writer, editor and manager of Rodale Press until 1971 when he became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until his death. Under his leadership the company expanded beyond its two most famous magazines, Organic Gardening and Prevention to include magazines such as Bicycling, Runner's World, Men's Health, American Woodworker, Mountain Bike, Backpacker and Scuba Diving, all leaders in their field. He competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City as part of the United States Skeet Shooting team and in 1987 he was inducted into the United States Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame. He created the Rodale Research Center to further develop organic farming techniques and coined the term "regenerative agriculture", a method of enhancing the quality of soil while using it for agriculture. In 1984 he was the recipient of the Presidential "World Without Hunger" award for his efforts in research and field applications of regenerative agricultural techniques. In 1990 he traveled to Russia to develop a long term joint venture agreement to publish Rodale magazines and books in that country. While in Russia he was tragically killed in an automobile accident.
