Kerney M. Adams was probably born in Letcher Co., Ky the son of Will and Loretta Jones Adams. He was professor of history at Eastern Ky. University from 1928-1969. In 1982 the University bestowed upon him the honor of Faculty Emeritus, History. My father was especially fond of Prof. Adams and named his first son after him.

Professor Adams' Obituary:

Kerney M. Adams, 90, Richmond, retired history professor at EKU, died Jan. 29, 1989 after a long illness.

He started his professional career at Eastern when it was a normal school in 1922. He obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Ky. in 1925. He graduated with a masters degree at Cornell University in 1928 where he was graduate assistant of Dr. Carl Becker..

He taught at EKU from 1928-1969 and was chairman of the department of history from 1953-1965. He retired from Eastern Ky. University in 1969.

During his tenure as a teacher, many articles were piblished in leading scholastic journals, which included the journal of Teacher Education, Journal of Higher education, Journal of General Education, and the Journal of Social Philosophy and Jurisprudence. The most innovative instructional programs that were significant professional achievements were his launching and teaching of the History of Western Civilization and his Introduction of the Ideological Foundations of western Civilization.

The EKU Board of Regents named a lecture hall in the Wallace Building in his honor, and his colleagues and former students established a history scholarship in his name.

He was married to the late Audine T. Adams.

He is survived by two sisters, Wilma Adams Crase, of Lexington and Lovette Adams Lucas of Beattyville; and by a brother, Jody H. Adams, of Lakeland, Fla.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1989 at 11 a.m. in the Turpin Funeral home with the rev. Tim Jones officiating. Burial was at the Berea Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Adams, Joe Dunn, Joe Ballew, Gene Parks, Clyde Lewis and Dr. Harvey H. LaFuze.


Mr. Kerney M. Adams, of Whitesburg, Ky., and Miss Audine Elizabeth Thompson, of Altoona, were united in marriage at 8:45 Monday evening by Rev. Lloyd H. Simpson, pastor of the local first United Presbterian church. The bride is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky., in the class of 1924, and for the past year was a teacher in the Altoona schools. Mr. Adams is also engaged in the teaching profession and is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College and the University of Kentucky."
