William lived in Richmond and owned a farm in Orange County, called "Hawfield". Before the Civil War, he opened the "Woolen Mills", located next to Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond.

He organized the "Crenshaw Battery" of Virginia Light Artillery in March 1862 and was mustered into service as a Captain. He resigned his commission on 18 April 1863 to serve as purchasing agent for the Confederate goverment in England. After the war, he farmed in Orange County and served as president of a saltpeter mine in Louisa County.

Alexandria Gazette, 25 May 1897:

Mr. Wm. G. Crenshaw, a prominent citizen of Orange, died yesterday at is home, Hamfield, of paralysis, in the 72d year of his age. He was the largest Landed proprietor and the most extensive farmer in the county. Capt. Crenshaw organized the famous Crenshaw Battery, of Richmond, during the late war.
