One of Tennessee's early industrialists, he operated an iron furnace at Cumberland Furnace, west of Nashville. He was the nephew of Revolutionary War General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne. His daughter Eleanora married Hugh Kirkman, son of a wealthy Nashville merchant.
