Bessie, the baby of her family, was just 9 years old when her father died and left her sweetheart of a mother with 4 young children to rear. She married Tommy Peace in 1923 and went on to have her own brood of 9 children. She worked hard to bring them up in a southern mill village during the depression years. She was a talented seamstress, with a wonderful sense of style, a great cook and an avid gardener. She surrounded her home with plants and flowers of every description. As a child it was a treat to spend the night with her and dine on chocolate biscuits for breakfast. Her pantry held a plethora of sites and smells as well as toys for all the grandchildren. She always had a beloved cat or two trailing her every step. She was my “city Grandmother” and one very elegant lady.
