Dad was first a singer. He loved rock and roll since he first saw Elvis on TV at seven years old. I heard the story many times. He got his first guitar, a Harmony Stella acoustic that I still own, for his birthday in 1963. Since that day, he played and sang until the day he died. When I was a child he was the main attraction at church. No one got a crowd going like he did. He sang every chance he could. He wrote some of the best gospel songs that were ever made and was also a coal miner for 32 years for the Drummond Coal Company. He retired after a work related injury. He made just a few recordings in his life but played hundreds of live shows. His show consisted of 70 songs and he sang the last one just as well as he did the first. He made national television appearances on TNN's Ralph Emery Show, CMT, and USA Network in Las Vegas. He just loved to touch people's hearts when he sang and did it every time he performed. He was my first and greatest musical influence and his work will carry on through generations as will his name, Gary E. Sanders,The Alabama Elvis.
