Martin was the first born of John and Lydia Brown of Edgar County Illinois. Martin enlisted in the Union Army as a volunteer into the 135th Illinois Infantry. Martin enlisted on May 7, 1864. He mustered into Co.C on June 6, 1864 . They were assigned to guard duty on Iron Mountain RR & Missouri Pacific RR in Jefferson City Mo. Most of the soldiers died of disease. Martin died on 8/23three months after his enlistment.
