Robert Eugene "Bob" Smith was called to the Lord on October 6, 2011. He was born January 2, 1941 in Anchorage to Eugene and Ingeborg (Swanson) Smith. Bob was raised in Anchorage. He was a talented musician, playing the saxophone for the school band. Bob was also known for his "cool" black Mercury with its yellow tuck-and-roll leather interior.
Following graduation, Bob enlisted in the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps quickly recognized Bob's musical talents and immediately made him a member of the Marine Corps Band.
In 1963 Bob returned to Anchorage. He was married and had four children. He became a born again Christian. Bob moved to Orange County, California where he became a regional manager of marketing for Pepsi. Bob's marriage ended in divorce and he returned to Alaska.
Bob met a former high school classmate and a romance began. On February 28, 1981, Bob and Renetta Thomas were married. Bob owned Alaska Direct Mail for over a decade.
In 1993 Bob and Renetta moved to Washington and became permanent residents of Coupeville on Whidbey Island. Bob was employed by Island County for 10 years as their mail supervisor.
Bob continued his love of music and soon joined several local music groups. He and Renetta were active members of St. Stephens Anglican Church of Oak Harbor. Bob also served as a volunteer for WAIF Animal Shelter, the Coupeville Library, and Gifts from the Heart Food Bank.
Bob is survived by his wife Renetta, three children: Rebecca Smith, Christy Smith, and
Robert S. Smith, three step children: Gilbert Serrano, Craig Serrano, and Jason Serrano, two brothers: Don Smith and Gary Smith. Donna Jean Smith, his eldest daughter, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held on October 12, 2011 at St. Stephen's and he was laid to rest at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville.
