Mrs. Nola "Dean" Brooks, 76, of Portales, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at her home.

She was born on April 27, 1927, in Etowah County, Ala., to Mary and Thomas William Carrell.
She grew up in Alabama. She married James Brooks on July 15, 1944, in Pascagoula, Miss. She was a construction plumber for many years. In 1951 they made Portales their home. She worked at the branch Post Office at Eastern New Mexico University. She retired in 1979. At that time they left the area again, but returned in 1990. In the various communities where they lived she was involved in hospital auxiliaries. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Family members said she enjoyed traveling with her husband.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband; two brothers, T.W. Carrell of Oxford, Ala., and Clifford Carrell of Miss.; and a sister, Olgaline Pruitt of Muleshoe.

Herbert Bergstrom and Philip Fike will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
