Eduard Schmidlin trained as a gardener in Stuttgart. In 1833 he took part in the Frankfurter Wachensturm, an unsuccessful attempt to start a revolution in Germany. He wrote numerous books and articles on botany and gardening and became a bestselling author in these fields. In 1857 he went to live in Switzerland, where he was instrumental in making the Hotel Giessbach in the Bernese Oberland one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Alps. After the Giessbach he was equally successful in running the Bellevue Hotel at Thun. In 1882 he retired to Dresden.
