Mr Prospector was sold as a yearling for $200,000 in 1971. He didn't race in the Triple Crown races but did well in sprints; his true legacy was as a sire. He sired a winner of each of the Triple Crown races and was grandsire of Unbridled.
He was generally referred to as Mr P as to opposed to his full name, Mr Prospector.
Mr P passed away in his stall of complications from colic at Claiborne Farm. His grave site is between Nijinsky and Secretariat.
