William Thomas Jr. was born in 1845, the third child of William Thomas Sr. and Matilda Clementine Simpkins. He was about 27 years old when he married Mathilda S. Barton in 1872. They had five children, and while details are not clear, it appears that Mathilda died in childbirth with their fifth child in 1887; a daughter named Ruth. William and Mathilda had the following children:
Mathilda "Mittie" 1874
Susan 1875
Joseph Richard "Rick" 1880
William Frederick "Fred" 1885
Ruth 1887

Early the following year, 1888, William remarried to Cordelia Jane "Delia" Coggins. They had six children:
Mamie Lou "Sister" 1888
Sally Leola "Ola" 1891
James Corbett 1893
Horace Augustus 1896
Margaret L "Maggie" 1899
Josie May 1905

One daughter; Maggie, apparently died at an early age; appearing in the 1900 census as a 1-year old but not listed in the 1910 census. A niece reported that family records suggested Maggie died at age 2. Another daughter was born in 1905, Josie May, and she was listed in the April 1910 census, but reportedly died 3 months later in July 1910.

In the 1888-1890 Atlanta City Directory, Fulton County, William was listed as a resident, working as a grocer. Then in the 1900 census he and his family were living in Rockmart, Polk County, where he and his oldest three children were all working as weavers in the local cotton mills.

William was only 64 years old when he died from unknown causes, leaving Cordelia with several children living at home. In the 1910 census she was listed as a farmer and the older of the children were all listed as farm laborers.
