Ferdinand Dean Hand, 91, of Fort Smith, died November 28, 2011. He was born August 21, 1920 in Elkhart, Indiana to Charles Elemuel Hand and Minnie Helbling Hand.

He was a metal polisher, later a confectionary store owner, later a missionary to the Navajo Indians on their reservation at Ramah, New Mexico, and later was an owner of Dari-Delight restaurants in Huntsville, Arkansas. He was an early partner of Henry and Richard Bloch of the H&R Block Company and was instrumental in helping them build their nationwide tax preparation empire. He contibuted and raised money to build church facilities in Hot Springs and in Waldron, Arkansas. He was a life member of Gideon International, a Hospice Volunteer, former song director for the First Church of the Nazarene in Hot Springs, Arkansas and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He personified and is a charter member of what is now called the "Greatest Generation."

He was a great brother, husband, father and father in law and grandfather who had a great sense of humor. He could keep his grandchildren mesmerized and entertained with his toupee, false teeth and flexing his muscles. He was the best fisherman I ever knew--always knew where and how to get the limit--well maybe over the limit sometimes. We did a lot of saltwater fishing at his condominium in Orange Beach, Alabama. He caught so many fish that all the local sea gulls recognized him and flew around him waiting for the treats (fish innards) that he would throw to them. They like us loved him too. He was also a great hunter...used big caliber guns and always came home with meat. May have exceded those limits also. He always had the best deer hounds around. I remember many, many great times with him hunting and fishing and talking world politics.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Barbara Jean Weed Hand of Fort Smith; two daughters, Jeanene Hand Godwin of Fort Smith and Nellie Hand Moseley and husband John Moseley of Williamsburg, Virginia; one son, Fred Hand of Pensacola, Florida; two brothers, William and John Hand both of Warsaw, Indiana; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

His funeral was held Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel and he was buried with military honors in the U.S. National Cemetary at Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Colonel John Bobbitt Moseley Senior, US Army Retired and family.
