MERIDEN, Iowa -- V. Lyle Mason, 85, of Carroll, Iowa, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa and Meriden, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Cleghorn Presbyterian Church in Cleghorn, Iowa, with the Revs. Michael Fitzsimmons and David Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Meriden Cemetery, with military rites. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Lyle was born Jan. 8, 1922, to George and Olive Mason, on the family farm south of Meriden. He attended school in Meriden and graduated in 1939. He continued his education in the U.S. Navy, enlisting in 1943 and serving until December 1945.

He was married Lorrene Drefke in July 1943. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Jean and Jim, both deceased, and Tim. He had farmed in the Meriden area and was a rural mail carrier for 35 years in the Meriden, Cleghorn and Marcus, Iowa areas.

He was very active in church and community affairs, such as elder and Sunday School superintendent at Cleghorn Presbyterian Church. He also served on the Meriden-Cleghorn School board, the Telephone board, Farm Bureau, Rural Mail Carriers, fair board and was a 4-H leader. He will be remembered for his plowing achievements in county, state and national matches.

He is survived by his wife, Lorrene of Carroll; a son and his wife, Tim and Jacquie Mason of Glidden, Iowa; grandchildren and their spouses, Jeremy and Tami Mason of Grimes, Iowa, and Brian and Tricia Wolterman of Audubon, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Malaki and Kyra; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Lee; a daughter, Jean Alice; his in-laws, William and Inez Drefke; two brothers and their wives, Don and Marie Mason and Ben and Gwen Mason; and two sisters and their husbands, Amy and Carl Peterson and Louise and Albert Gravatt.
