Clifton Hale was born on his parents' farm and spoke of riding a horse to a one room rural grade school. A farmboy with mechanical ability, he briefly attended the University of Wisconsin before the outbreak of World War II, when he joined the Navy as a mechanic. While stationed in California and Hawaii, he began a correspondence with Bette Lyon, a friend of his sister Marjorie back in Illinois. In late 1944, she joined him in Alameda, California where they were married and resided until war's end. They returned to McLean Co., Illinois, where three sons (Gary, Mark and Dennis) were born.

During the post-war years, the Hales kept in contact with another ex-navy couple with whom they'd shared living space in California, the Donald Picketts of Atlanta. In 1957 the Hale family moved to Georgia, where Cliff Hale was employed at Beaudry Ford in Atlanta for nearly twenty years. After an early retirement and the proverbial empty nest, Cliff and Bette Hale lived briefly at a lake property in North Georgia and then at High Point, North Carolina, near son Dennis' young family. There, Clifton Hale died suddenly of a heart attack at age fifty-eight. (Bio by Mark Hale)
