Cecil M. Courtney was born in Petites, on the SW coast of Newfoundland. He was the youngest of 12 siblings and he married Mary Jane Ford who was the oldest of 6 siblings, on Jan 4, 1926 in Channel-Port Aux Basques at the SW corner of Newfoundland. They moved from Newfoundland to Detroit soon after their wedding, and purchased a small plot at 14824 Burgess Street on the north west side of the city, where he built his own home. They raised three daughters in that home and continued to live there until their deaths. Cecil worked in various jobs, and retired from a company making auto parts for Chrysler Corporation. He (not she) was a member for most of his life of the Brightmoor Tabernacle, which was located at that time on Fenkell Ave. in Detroit.
