Darcus Anna Oakes was a daughter of William Oaks (1835-1869) and Usley Morrison Oakes (1834-1900). She was born near Hibernia, Kentucky. Her mother, Usley, is buried in Corinth Baptist Church cemetery. Her father's burial Location is not documented. He served in the Civil War.

In the 1860 Taylor County census, William is head of household 124. He is 25 years of age, a Farmer, born in Kentucky. His wife, Usley, 26 years old was also born in Kentucky. Their children: James R., 2; and Dorcas, age 1 year. They lived two doors from Usley's brother, William J. Morrison.

In the 1870 Taylor County census, Saloma Precinct 1, William has died and Usley was head of family 136. She was 34 years old, a Farmer born in Kentucky. The children were: James R., 15; Darcus A., 14; Nancy J., 12; Jackson, 10; Susan, 8; and May, age 6 years.

Darcus Oakes Purvis died in Mineral, Bureau County, Illinois and was brought back to LaRue County for burial in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
