Promoted to Corporal on 1 Apr 1863, he was wounded at Deep Bottom Virginia on 16 Aug 1864, and was mustered out on 22 Nov 1864 at Pittsburgh. The source for his Civil War service came from the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Veterans Card File, 1861-1866. Alexander married Matilda Houston (1841 - 1901), daughter of Alfred and Maria (Cosner) Houston, on 1 March 1877, in Champaign County, Illinois. The report of his passing was mentioned in the Gibson City news, indicating he died after a brief illness.
