Gertrude Olivia Anderson

G Olivia Anderson, 96, a former Sheboygan area teacher, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Encore , Senior Living in Beloit, where she resided since April 2002.

Olivia was born Nov. 19, 1906, on Washington Island, to the late Martin and Gertrude Hannesson Andersen. She grew up on the family farm, attended Door County Normal School, the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, and the University of Oslo, Norway.

She began a 46-year teaching career in 1926 teaching at various Door County schools. She then taught third and fourth grades in Sheboygan from 1948 until retirement in 1972, teaching at Longfellow and Grant schools. Olivia was an active member of the Wisconsin Education Association, the Sheboygan Education Association, and the Sheboygan County Area Retired Teachers Association.

Olivia was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where she taught catechism, summer Bible School, and was an active member of United Methodist Women and Church Women United. Olivia demonstrated her love for Sheboygan through volunteering as a docent at the Sheboygan Heritage School, the Sheboygan Senior Center, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, conducting picture study at Washington Elementary School, and teaching knitting through community services.

Olivia spent many summers at South Beach as an attendant making lifelong friendships with many children. She welcomed children into her home, teaching them cribbage, poetry, and the love of learning. Olivia spent many precious hours with her nieces, nephews, and their children, always teaching in a fun way. Olivia is remembered for her love of walking, the hikes with family, her love of poetry, tri-colored pencils, treasures collected for others to take home, Chiclets gum, crossword puzzles, and paper snowflakes.

Survivors include a brother, Hannes (Bette) Andersen and sister, Sylvia Nelson, both of Washington Island; nieces and nephews, Mary Campbell of Canton, Pa., Helen Williams of Scottsdale, Pa., Dorothy (William) Neal of Roaring Branch, Pa., John Gust of Killeen, Texas, George Nelson, Martin (Mary) Andersen, and Peter (Mary Lynn) Andersen, all of Washington Island; Maren (Alan) Lund of West Allis, Ann (John) Schroeder of Beloit, and Christine Andersen of Burlingame, Calif. She is further survived by many great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends over three generations. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin (Lorraine), a sister, Louise (Howard), and a brother-in-law, Spencer Nelson.

Olivia will be greatly missed by many of all ages. May all who knew her remember to tell her story to future generations, and maybe even teach them a poem along the way.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 18, at 10 a.m., at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Rev. Les Munnik, associate pastor, will officiate. A time of visitation will be on Friday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Washington Island Cemetery.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the entire staff of Beloit Encore Senior Living for being Olivia's extended family the past year, and the loving care they gave her.

Memorials may be directed to the G Olivia memorial fund in care of the family. Olivia established a Charitable Gift Fund and scholarships from which Sheboygan and Washington Island students and charities will benefit over the coming years.
