Mel was born to Ole Martinsen Bellerud (Norwegian heritage) and Nellie Carrie Agnes Nelson Bellerud Dahle (Danish and Norwegian heritage), owners of the Nekoma Mercantile General Store. 3 more siblings followed, Orville, May and Alister. Melvin attended the North Dakota Business College. He returned to operate the Mercantile for several years, his father having passed in 1926. He was married to Inez Helen L--- (Bellerud, C----) May 8,1936. They had two children, a son (1937) and a daughter (1939), while residing in Nekoma in the house Ole built. They then moved to Grafton, ND where they owned and operated a shoe store (Peters Shoes) for several years before moving to Park Rapids, Minn. and owning/operating another shoe store there. Another son was born there in 1948. They owned a home on East Crooked Lake near Nevis, MN, not far from Park Rapids, as well as a home in downtown PR. The family moved in 1952 to Parkland, WA, near Melvin's mother and uncle, Haaken Bellerud. They eventually moved to a small farm close to Olympia, WA, near Mud Bay, Melvin taking a position with Investor's Diversified Services, a Mutual Funds company later to become Ameriprise Financial. Melvin and Inez liked to travel and they and various members of the family explored much of the United States, Europe and Mexico. He passed in 1974 at only 62 years old due to kidney failure and diabetes.
He was a very personable man, loved to talk with any and all acquaintances on subjects of mutual interest. He enjoyed many hobbies, hunted and fished, raised Black Angus cattle, played a mean game of snooker and maintained a lifetime association with the Lutheran Church.
