It's appropriate that Loretta "Sarge" Stein Gampfer got her nickname from her nieces and nephews, because they meant everything to her, said her husband, Carroll Gampfer of Fort Thomas.
Mrs. Gampfer, who died Friday at age 85, didn't have any children of her own, but was a second mother to her nieces and nephews.
She and her husband used to baby-sit their two nieces and two nephews one Saturday night a month. One night, Mr. Gampfer had to roust them all out of his favorite chair. In the process, they bumped a lamp and made a ruckus.
Mrs. Gampfer came into the room and warned the children that they were going to break something. "I said, 'Oh, you give more orders than a buck sergeant,'" Mr. Gampfer said. "From then on, she was Sarge."
That was the only name the children knew her by, so much so that they had to ask who Aunt Loretta was when they heard that name, her husband said.
Mrs. Gampfer was born and raised in Newport, where she left school in the eighth grade and worked as a housekeeper for relatives. She worked for Grote Manufacturing in Bellevue, and then almost 25 years for Gibson Greeting Card Co. in Cincinnati, where she became a supervisor.
Aside from her nieces and nephews, she had few interests other than her house, which she kept immaculate, her husband said.
She was a quiet person, who didn't mix well with people outside her family, he said.
Other survivors include sisters, Sister Mary Mathilda, C.D.P., of Melbourne, Norma Wagner, Rita Weber and Ruth Lother, all of Fort Thomas; and brothers, Robert Stein and Donald Stein, both of Southgate.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
