Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Major in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in Company D, 9th New York Cavalry for action in November 1864 near Cedar Creek, Virgina. His citation reads "While the command was falling back, he returned and in the face of the enemy rescued a sergeant from under his fallen horse." His remains were cremated at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois before being returned to Portland, Michigan.
