Regimental History
Fifth Infantry
TENNESSEE
(3-YEARS)

Fifth Infantry. -- Col. James T. Shelley, Lieut.-Cols.,
Fremortin Young, Charles C. McCaleb, Nat Witt; Majs., Joseph D. Turner, David G. Bowers.

This regiment was organized at Barboursville, Ky., by Col.
Shelley, of Roane county, Tenn., in March, 1862. As a part of Spear's brigade it participated in the operations around Cumberland Gap during the summer of 1862, also in the retreat from that place, and subsequently in the battle of Stone's River.

It was present at Chickamauga, and took an active part in the battle of Missionary Ridge. In the Georgia campaign it formed a part of Manson's brigade, and with the remainder of the 23rd corps returned to fight Hood before Nashville.

It was mustered out by companies at different dates from March 29 to June 30, 1865, by reason of expiration of term of service.
