John Wesley Gatts and his wife Ellen Mary (Louther or Lowther) Gatts were born in West Virginia and married in Wood, West Virginia on July 7, 1867.

It is easy to locate the Gatts' family in the 1870, 1880, 1910 and 1920 census. But I was unable to locate them in 1900. I believe it was at this time that they were making their way to California where J. W. would work as a 'teamster" in the lumber industry.

In 1870 and 1880 Mary (as she liked to be called) mother Susan lived with them. However the writing is hard to decipher and one would have to guess at Mary's maiden name to be Lowther, Louther or Souther.

John died sometime in 1923 according to the San Francisco Genealogy Society an Ellen Mary Gatts died in the year of 1931. Both were living in the Redwood City area at the time.

On the marker there are only JW Gatts' initials, however it does say "husband and wife". There are no dates and Mary's name does not appear on the marker. One would have to gather that Mary is probably not buried with her husband. For the record, Mary was born in 1841-1931.
