Clara Alberta McNealy was born in Hants County, Nova Scotia 16 December 1873. She came to California to live with her sister, Helena McNealy Mosher for health reasons, possibly tuberculosis. Her health deteriorated despite the move. She died in Palo Alto 11 February 1902.
She wrote a lengthy letter to her sister Jane in Nova Scotia detailing her travels from Nova Scotia to California across the United States. It was published in a Nova Scotia newspaper.
