He was a member of Missouri Peace Officers Association and Retired Employees Association of Kansas City Police Department.
He was a Masonic Lodge member of Orient Lodge 546, Scottish Rite, Ararat Shrine, and a member of the Provost Unit of Ararat. He was a member of Order of Eastern Star Golden Gate Chapter 58, and had served as Past Patron. Gary was a member of American Legion Post 0499, VFW Post 9762, and a member of Colonial Church, Prairie Village, KS.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol Wait, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah K. and Michael Vitner of Kansas City, MO, Kelly L. and John M. Uppman of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Kathryn L. Wait of Independence, MO; brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Gwen Wait of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren, Richard G. Thelander, Joseph M. Thelander, Michael E. Vitner, Steven M. Vitner, Matthew G. Uppman and Erin A. Uppman; and special friend, "Junior Heavy Wait," his canine grandson.
